Maine Lumberjacks           25
6     They picked the face of one of them
From bottom to the top; Full thirty feet this landing Had a perpendicular drop.
7     To work the face much longer
It would seem a foolish part; A jar so slight, you see, it might This lofty landing start.
8     There were a few among them
Who volunteered to go, To roll the logs from off the top To start the jam below.
9     This young man being among them
With heart both true and brave, Not thinking ere the night would be All stricken for the grave;
10     Not thinking ere death's cold hands
So soon should lay him low, To leave the ones he loved so dear In sorrow, grief, and woe.
11      The logs he quickly started;
The jam it cracked below; It sped on downward to the verge, But would no farther go.
12     This young man now approaches
The verge of the landing high, While all the crew with paled cheeks And trembling limbs stood by.
